About the Safra Synagogue
of Deal

A community of prayer, learning, and belonging — rooted in Sephardic tradition and dedicated to the Jewish families of the Shore.

Our History

A Legacy of Faith
in Deal, New Jersey

The Edmond J. Safra Synagogue of Deal was established to serve the growing Sephardic Jewish community of the New Jersey Shore, particularly the Deal and Elberon area where many Syrian and Sephardic Jewish families have made their home.

Named in honor of the renowned philanthropist and devoted Jew, Edmond J. Safra, our synagogue was founded on his enduring values: unwavering commitment to Torah study, steadfast dedication to prayer, and deep care for the Jewish community worldwide.

Edmond J. Safra was known throughout the world not only for his remarkable business achievements, but for his extraordinary generosity — building and supporting synagogues, yeshivot, and Jewish institutions across every continent. His name graces our synagogue as a permanent reminder of what it means to live a life in service of Torah and community.

Today, the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue of Deal carries that legacy forward — welcoming families throughout the year, and especially during the vibrant summer season when the Deal community swells with Jewish families from across the tri-state area and beyond.

What We Stand For

Our Core Values

Everything we do flows from these pillars — the same values that guided Edmond J. Safra throughout his extraordinary life of faith and generosity.

Torah

The study of Torah is the foundation of Jewish life. We offer ongoing learning opportunities for all ages, rooted in the Sephardic tradition and the wisdom of our sages.

Tefillah

Prayer is the language of the soul. Our daily and Shabbat services follow the beautiful Sephardic liturgy, creating a space for meaningful connection with the Divine.

Community

No person stands alone. Our synagogue is a place where every member of the community — young and old, longtime member and first-time visitor — is welcomed with warmth.

Chesed

Acts of loving-kindness are among the highest of Jewish values. We support community members in times of joy and sorrow, embodying the mitzvah of caring for one another.

Heritage

Our Sephardic customs, melodies, and traditions are a precious inheritance. We preserve and celebrate our heritage, passing it with pride to the next generation.

Continuity

The Jewish future depends on investment in the next generation. Our youth and educational programs ensure that the flame of Torah and tradition burns brightly forward.

In His Memory

The Legacy of Edmond J. Safra

Edmond J. Safra was among the most generous Jewish philanthropists of the twentieth century. Born in Beirut to a family with deep Syrian Jewish roots, he built a global banking empire while never wavering from his commitment to Torah, family, and the Jewish people.

Throughout his life, Safra donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Jewish educational institutions, synagogues, and charitable organizations around the world. He supported communities from New York and New Jersey to Israel, Brazil, France, and beyond — ensuring that wherever Jews lived, they had places to pray and learn.

The Edmond J. Safra Synagogue of Deal stands as a living tribute to his memory — a place where his spirit of generosity, his love of Torah, and his devotion to community continues to inspire every person who walks through our doors.
